Scams Awareness Month

Scams Awareness Month July 2015

Dont be Rushed Dont be Hushed

This coming July, Havering Citizens Advice BureauActive Living project, in partnershipwith Havering Council and the Metropolitan Police will be participating in roadshow events to bring attention to those out of the blue scams. Look out for the roadshow promotional boards around the Borough. These will be found in various locations including Queens Hospital, Ardleigh House & Cranham Community Associations.

The aim is to create a community of informed, confident consumers able to recognise possible scams and be assertive in dealing with them. Using the slogan Dont be Rushed Dont be Hushed” consumers can get advice on how to refuse to be forced into making rushed decisions by scammers. And to have the confidence to speak out about their experiences and not be hushed because of a sense of shame, foolhardiness or weary acceptance.

There will also be an opportunity to speak in private to a member of the team to discuss any relevant concerns people may have. Everyone is welcome.

The Roadshow Dates and Venues are:

14th July 2015  2-4pm Nat West Bank, 10 South Street, Romford

15th July 2015         10am-2pm Barclays Bank 136 High Street, Hornchurch

16th July 2015         12-2pm Tesco Roneo Corner, 300 Hornchurch Road, Hornchurch

Food Hygiene course

Food Hygiene Course goes down a treat

Food safety across Havering is about to be improved, thanks to a food hygiene course offered by Havering Council and HealthWorks.

A total of eight staff from four different businesses in the borough took part on the first course on Tuesday 19 May, in order to improve both safety standards and their hygiene rating, as well as providing a better service to customers.

There are still places available on future dates for the one-day course that is being offered by Havering Council in partnership with HealthWorks. Those who complete the training will be awarded a nationally recognised qualification and be registered with the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health).

Further courses are being held from 9:15am until 4:30pm on 16 June, 14 July, 15 September, 13 October and 17 November 2015. The cost is £60 for the first booking and £55 for any additional bookings from the same business for the same course date.

Food outlets across the Borough are inspected on a regular basis and given a rating according to the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Any outlets that do not meet the criteria will be given advice on how to improve their hygiene rating. Having a good Food Hygiene Rating shows customers that their safety is important.

Councillor Osman Dervish, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said:
“I am really pleased that those working in the food industry in the borough are taking responsibility for food safety at their premises by taking part in this training.

“We expect food outlets in Havering to be safe and of a high standard, and I would encourage those who have not yet completed the training to do so.”

Lisa Marjoram, Manager at Chatterbugs Nursery in Collier Row, said:

‘It’s a very good course and it’s delivered well. The information was also relevant to the nursery sector.  I would definitely recommend this course to anyone to keep up to date with legislation.’

Lynda Rhodes, from Linda Rhodes Cakes, Wiltshire Avenue, Hornchurch
“This was a very good course and with an excellent tutor.  It is interesting and informative with all questions fully answered.  The food safety booklet is an excellent back up resource to the day.  It really is the best food safety course I have attended.”

Places can be booked by emailing healthworksinlondon@gmail.com with a business name and preferred date for the course.
