Gin Lane talk

Hornchurch Library will be hosting a talk by Adrian Teal on the Gin Lane Gazette.  The Gin Lane Gazette is a "Devilishly intriguing compendium of Scandal and Oddities from the darkest recesses of Georgian England."  Adrian is an inspired cartoonist and satirist, so this promises to be a highly amusing event.  Proceedings to commence at 2.30pm on the 27th day of March.  Tickets are £5 for library members (£5.50 non-members) 

Italian Market

Italian Market returns to Romford town centre

on Sunday 23^rd February 2014.

 

Italia in Piazza is an innovative and authentic Italian Food Market comprising a number of mouth-watering stalls bringing you all the wonderful tastes you would expect to get in Italy, such as parmigiano reggiano, prosciutto, salame, olives, extra virgin olive oils and much more.

 

There will be some Italian themed entertainment throughout the day to entertain shoppers as follows:

 

• Children will be able to have the opportunity to access Italian craft activities on the day.

 

• Italian themed street performers will entertain members of the public.

 

• Italian themed face painting.

 

• An Italian quiz for adults and children on the day courtesy of Havering Adult College. The winners will receive an Italian food hamper.

 

The Italian food market will be located along South Street and will run from 10am until 4pmand will hopefully add an extra dimension to the towns vibrancy and offer while increasing footfall within the town centre on a Sunday.

Life expectancy in Havering

Life expectancy is a frequently used indicator of the overall health of a population: a longer life expectancy is generally a reflection of better health. Reducing the differences in life expectancy is a key part of reducing health inequalities.

 

Life expectancy at birth for an area is an estimate of how long, on average, babies born today may live if she or he experienced that area’s age-specific mortality rates for that time period throughout her or his life.

Male life expectancy at birth in Havering is 79.1 years, which is higher (but not statistically significantly) than the average life expectancy for England (+0.2years)

Councils losing on public health funds.

London councils losing out on public health funds

London councils are struggling to receive sufficient public health funds, with some given far less than the national average, figures have revealed. The statistics show 12 of the 33 London boroughs receive less than the average £49 per resident to spend on public health services, relating to sexual health, obesity and healthier living campaigns. Councils in the capital receiving the lowest funding are Bexley, £29; Redbridge, £35; Harrow and Havering, both £36, andBarnet, £37. Other London councils receiving less than the England average include Bromley,Enfield, Waltham Forest, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton, Merton and Hounslow.

Library Services

Services for Hearing Impaired and Deaf.
We have been looking at how we can help Deaf customers to access our services.  We have a couple of members of staff who are level 1 British Sign Language (BSL) signers (Romford and South Hornchurch, please ring ahead to make sure they are available).  We also run a reading group with a BSL signer on the first Tuesday of the month at Romford Library, starting at 2pm.  You can bring your own books or choose one of ours.  The group is newly formed and very informal.
