Biking borough Havering will hold its first dedicated cycling event, Bikewise, this Sunday (6 March), which will be attended by Olympic gold medallist Mark Hunter MBE, who won at the Beijing games in the lightweight double sculls rowing event.
Havering is one of 13 London boroughs chosen by Mayor Boris Johnson to become a biking borough, aimed at encouraging more residents to get on their bikes.
Bikewise will be held at Hornchurch Country Park and is open from 10am to 4pm. Activities will include lead cycle rides, performances from the MAD BMX display team who will also be offering coaching to small groups, a cycle polo tournament where teams of three play polo on their bikes and children's activities such as face painting and a balloon modeller.
Cyclists can also give their bikes some TLC by visiting Dr Bike for maintenance and advice, watch a uni cyclist in action and speak to the local police about safety and security in the saddle.
British Transport Police will be using a specially adapted lorry to show cyclists when they are in the driver's blind spot, to help reduce accidents involving cyclists on the road. TfL's Director of Better Routes and Places, Ben Plowden, will also be at the event.
Councillor Barry Tebbutt, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We want to encourage as many people as possible to start cycling and this event will allow us to give them help and support in getting started.
"For more experienced cyclists, it will be a great chance to get their bikes looked over by Dr Bike, or enjoy watching stunt cyclists and the polo tournament. Now is a great time to think about cycling, there are health benefits, it's cheaper than getting out the car for every short journey and we are also constructing a walking and cycling route throughout the borough, Ingrebourne Way."
The cycle polo tournament will take place throughout the day and finish with the presentation of a trophy to the winning team.
