More trees and benches for Romford's South Street

Havering Council is doubling the number of trees in South Street and introducing new benches as part of an improvement scheme in the town centre.
Twelve new semi-mature Ginkgo Biloba trees will be planted near the rail station end of South Street.
These 12 trees will join three other mature trees near the rail bridge. The Council is removing three smaller damaged trees to make way for the new trees.
The Ginkgo Biloba trees have been chosen as they keep their leaves for longer than most varieties and shed fewer leaves.
In addition to making the area more green, three new metal benches are to be placed between the trees, bringing the total number of benches to eight. The five current metal benches are to be repaired, cleaned up and fitted with arm rests to help less able-bodied people rise and sit down.
The trees and benches will be arranged in a row which will make walking along South Street easier for pedestrians. Currently pedestrians find themselves having to weave around trees, benches and advertising boards.
The Council will also be replacing broken paving stones and cleaning up chewing gum.
Councillor Barry Tebbutt, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We know our residents care a lot about what the borough looks like and these trees are exactly what this part of the town centre area needs. Thousands of people will walk under these beautiful trees on their way to work or the shops and these trees will grow and become more beautiful over many years. We also want to offer more places for people to rest and will be placing the new benches in a row to de-clutter and open up the footway."
The work, funded by Transport for London, is expected to be completed by early April.

Biking borough Havering will hold its first dedicated cycling event, Bikewise, this Sunday (6 March), which will be attended by Olympic gold medallist Mark Hunter MBE, who won at the Beijing games in the lightweight double sculls rowing event.
Jpeg
Havering is one of 13 London boroughs chosen by Mayor Boris Johnson to become a biking borough, aimed at encouraging more residents to get on their bikes.
Bikewise will be held at Hornchurch Country Park and is open from 10am to 4pm. Activities will include lead cycle rides, performances from the MAD BMX display team who will also be offering coaching to small groups, a cycle polo tournament where teams of three play polo on their bikes and children's activities such as face painting and a balloon modeller.
Cyclists can also give their bikes some TLC by visiting Dr Bike for maintenance and advice, watch a uni cyclist in action and speak to the local police about safety and security in the saddle.
British Transport Police will be using a specially adapted lorry to show cyclists when they are in the driver's blind spot, to help reduce accidents involving cyclists on the road. TfL's Director of Better Routes and Places, Ben Plowden, will also be at the event.
Councillor Barry Tebbutt, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We want to encourage as many people as possible to start cycling and this event will allow us to give them help and support in getting started.
"For more experienced cyclists, it will be a great chance to get their bikes looked over by Dr Bike, or enjoy watching stunt cyclists and the polo tournament. Now is a great time to think about cycling, there are health benefits, it's cheaper than getting out the car for every short journey and we are also constructing a walking and cycling route throughout the borough, Ingrebourne Way."
The cycle polo tournament will take place throughout the day and finish with the presentation of a trophy to the winning team.

Review of Polling Districts and Polling Places 2011

Following the implementation of the new Ward boundaries at the 2002 Local Elections, a thorough review of polling districts and polling places was carried out:-
1) To bring the polling districts in line with the new Ward boundaries.
2) To equalise the number of polling districts and therefore polling places in each Ward
3) To remove some polling places which were less accessible and for which another more suitable location could be found.
The Electoral Administration Act 2006 amended Section 18 of the Representation of the People Act 1983, requiring that a polling district and polling place review be carried out by the Acting Returning Officer in 2007 and every fourth year thereafter.
The review was carried out in 2007 and the 2011 review is now being undertaken.

Apprenticeships

Secondary school students in Havering had a first hand look at the kind of apprenticeships that are available in Havering as part of last week's National Apprenticeship Week.
Eight secondary schools along with Havering College of Further & Higher Education took part in hosting apprenticeship information sessions during where 358 students were shown a DVD that had been produced by Creative & Media students from Havering Sixth Form College.
The DVD was a presentation of apprentices in Havering working in a variety of different roles. The apprentices described their experiences of learning and earning, as well as commentary from employers, parents and training providers about the benefits of apprenticeships.
The road shows combined staff from the London Borough of Havering, Connexions, Havering College of Further & Higher Education and Capital Gold Trowel and seven BT apprentices who spoke to the students about their own apprenticeship journey.
The Leader of Havering Council, Councillor Michael White visited Marshalls Park School in Romford during the road show, where he spoke with students about the opportunities that apprenticeships can offer them.
He said: "Apprenticeships are an excellent way to help young people develop skills and move from school into the workforce as they provide study and on the job training. Apprentices are highly regarded by employers because the skills they learn are skills for life".
Havering College's Employer Engagement Manager Nigel Hogg said:
"With fierce competition for jobs and the increase in university fees, more and more young people are looking to vocational routes where they can learn marketable skills. An apprenticeship allows a young person to gain recognised qualifications while they work.
"The road show and our own parents' information evening were very well received and as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting apprenticeships and apprenticeship training, we will shortly be hosting a business conference to encourage employers to take on apprentices."
