More trees and benches for Romford's South Street

Havering Council is doubling the number of trees in South Street and introducing new benches as part of an improvement scheme in the town centre.
Twelve new semi-mature Ginkgo Biloba trees will be planted near the rail station end of South Street.
These 12 trees will join three other mature trees near the rail bridge. The Council is removing three smaller damaged trees to make way for the new trees.
The Ginkgo Biloba trees have been chosen as they keep their leaves for longer than most varieties and shed fewer leaves.
In addition to making the area more green, three new metal benches are to be placed between the trees, bringing the total number of benches to eight. The five current metal benches are to be repaired, cleaned up and fitted with arm rests to help less able-bodied people rise and sit down.
The trees and benches will be arranged in a row which will make walking along South Street easier for pedestrians. Currently pedestrians find themselves having to weave around trees, benches and advertising boards.
The Council will also be replacing broken paving stones and cleaning up chewing gum.
Councillor Barry Tebbutt, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We know our residents care a lot about what the borough looks like and these trees are exactly what this part of the town centre area needs. Thousands of people will walk under these beautiful trees on their way to work or the shops and these trees will grow and become more beautiful over many years. We also want to offer more places for people to rest and will be placing the new benches in a row to de-clutter and open up the footway."
The work, funded by Transport for London, is expected to be completed by early April.
