The impact on travel is expected to be more focused on the City and East London. Not all of the venues are in use today but transport is expected to be busier from tomorrow when athletics start in the Olympic Stadium and busier next week when all venues will be in operation and the schools start to go back.
The timings of the Paralympic competition schedule mean that tens of thousands of spectators are travelling to and from venues in the morning and evening peak periods. This will particularly be the case in the evening peak period from 16:00 − 19:00 when venue sessions change over, with crowds both leaving and heading to venues.
London is open for business, so please continue to enjoy London’s many theatres, restaurants, shops and other attractions. The Trafalgar Square Live Site, which has space for 10,000 spectators, is open from 11:00 − 22:00 daily. A big screen is also open in Potters Fields, which is near City Hall and London Bridge. |

The Paralympic Route Network (PRN) is now in operation and is concentrated in the City and East London. This includes Games Lanes for the use of athletes, officials and the world’s media to get them to events on time. These are being operated flexibly and being opened to regular traffic when they are less busy; a network of over 30 roadside electronic variable message signs along the route will advise when this is the case. To watch a short video explaining how the PRN and Games Lanes work, please click here
Where possible, please avoid driving on or around the PRN and near venue areas particularly around the Olympic Park in Stratford and the A102 approach roads north and south of the Blackwall Tunnel.
Currently, there is congestion being seen on the A2, A12 and A13, particularly in the morning peak. Roads east of St. Paul’s, including those in and approaching the City of London, such as Upper Thames Street and Lower Thames Street, and roads around Games venues are busier than usual. If driving is your only option, please travel at a different time if possible or allow more time for your journey.
